What changes for a CBSE student between Class 6 and Class 8?

The middle years are when school stops being one class teacher and a handful of subjects and becomes a timetable of specialists. Chapters lengthen, homework expects your child to read on their own, and marks increasingly depend on writing answers in full sentences.

It is also when gaps form quietly. A child who never quite understood fractions in Class 6 struggles with ratios and algebra later; a child who reads slowly falls behind in Science and Social Science, where questions are wordy. Problems like these are far simpler to address now than in the run-up to board exams.

  • Class 6: settling into separate subjects and longer chapters, and making fractions and basic geometry solid.
  • Class 7: more abstract ideas — letters standing for numbers in maths, and science that asks “why?” after every activity.
  • Class 8: the bridge to Class 9, as algebra becomes more formal and the science of the secondary stage begins to take shape.

Why do the NCERT books look different now?

NCERT has been releasing new textbooks written to the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023. In the middle stage, Class 6 received them first, followed by Classes 7 and 8. Titles such as Ganita Prakash for Mathematics and Curiosity for Science replace the older books, with more activities, puzzles and everyday questions.

If your child’s books look nothing like an older sibling’s, that is why. Our teachers teach from whichever NCERT edition your child’s school is using, so explanations, examples and practice line up with the pages your child sees in class.

Which subjects can a middle-school child take?

Any school subject can be taken on its own or alongside others:

  • Mathematics: number sense, fractions and decimals, early algebra, geometry and data handling, taught step by step from the NCERT chapter.
  • Science: the activities and experiments in the textbook explained clearly, plus practice in writing short, precise answers.
  • English: reading comprehension, grammar and writing, using the school’s English textbook and grammar work.
  • Social Science: history, geography and civics topics turned into stories and maps your child can remember, with help structuring longer answers.
  • Hindi: reading, grammar and writing support for students who study Hindi at school.

How do live online classes work for an 11- to 13-year-old?

Children this age get the most from a lesson when they are talking and doing, not just listening. In a one-to-one class there is no back row to hide in: the teacher asks your child to explain a step, try the next problem or read a paragraph aloud, and catches misunderstandings the moment they appear.

If your child would enjoy learning alongside other children, ask us about small-group classes as well — we can help you decide which suits them once we have met them in the free session.

Classes run live online from a laptop, tablet or phone. You may want to help with the first class or two; after that, joining is straightforward, because on class day a Join button in the student panel opens the lesson.

How do parents keep track when they can’t sit in?

Busy parents rarely have time to watch every lesson, and with a child of eleven or twelve you shouldn’t need to. After each class a written summary arrives describing the topic, what your child practised, the step that tripped them up and what to revise before the next lesson. Our team reviews it before it is published to you.

Teachers can explain in English or Malayalam, which helps children who think in Malayalam but study in English at a CBSE school. And if the teacher turns out not to be the right fit, we will arrange another.
