How is the CBSE Class 10 board exam structured?

In the main Class 10 subjects — Mathematics, Science, Social Science, English and Hindi — the written board paper carries 80 marks and internal assessment the other 20. Those 20 marks are earned during the year through periodic tests, notebook or portfolio work and a subject enrichment activity, such as Science practicals, a Social Science project, or listening and speaking work in the languages.

Board papers mix question types: objective and multiple-choice items, assertion–reason questions, case-based or source-based questions, and longer answers where working and presentation earn marks. CBSE publishes sample question papers with marking schemes each year, and those documents shape how our teachers set practice.

CBSE has also introduced a second, optional Class 10 board exam later in the same year, giving students a chance to improve in a limited number of subjects. We plan revision so the main exam is treated as the one that counts, then help your child weigh up whether the second sitting is worth taking.

Mathematics Standard or Mathematics Basic — which should your child take?

CBSE offers Class 10 Mathematics at two levels. Both follow the same syllabus; the Basic paper is less demanding than the Standard one. The choice reaches beyond Class 10: a student who sits Basic generally cannot take Mathematics in Class 11, although Applied Mathematics remains open.

In the free session and the early classes, the teacher sees how your child handles unfamiliar problems, then talks it through with you, keeping in mind whether Science or Commerce with Maths is likely after Class 10. The decision stays with your family; our job is to give you an honest read on readiness.

What does Class 10 tuition cover in each subject?

Lessons follow your child’s NCERT textbooks chapter by chapter. Typical areas of focus:

  • Mathematics: polynomials, linear and quadratic equations, arithmetic progressions, triangles and circles, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and its applications, mensuration, statistics and probability.
  • Science: chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, metals and carbon compounds; life processes, control and coordination, reproduction and heredity; light, the human eye, electricity and magnetism.
  • Social Science: History, Geography with map work, Political Science and Economics, plus practice on source-based and case-based questions.
  • English: reading comprehension, grammar, writing tasks such as formal letters, and the prose and poetry in the literature readers.
  • Hindi: grammar, reading and writing for Course A or Course B, whichever your child is registered for.

How should a CBSE Class 10 year be planned?

Readiness for the board exam is built in stages, not in the final month. A typical one-to-one plan runs in three phases:

  • April to the half-yearly exams: keep pace with school, secure each chapter as it is taught, and repair gaps carried over from Class 9.
  • Half-yearly exams to pre-boards: complete the syllabus, begin mixed-chapter practice, and attempt CBSE sample papers under time limits.
  • Pre-boards to the board exam: full papers, a marking-scheme review of your child’s own answers, and focused revision of the chapters that still lose marks.

What does “board-exam ready” mean — and what doesn’t it mean?

For us it means your child has been taught every chapter in the syllabus, has practised each question type against the clock, and understands how CBSE marking schemes award step marks for working. It does not mean a promised score. Board marks rest on your child’s own work in the exam hall, and no honest tutor can promise them — we don’t.

What you can count on is visibility. The written summary after each class records the chapter covered, where your child slipped and what to practise next, so you watch the preparation take shape across the year instead of waiting for the report card. Students who join mid-year simply start where the school is, while earlier chapters are rebuilt alongside.
