What does a one-to-one English tutor help with?

School English is really four skills sharing one subject name: grammar, reading, writing and literature. A child can be strong in one and quietly losing marks in another — fluent in conversation yet unsure how to lay out a formal letter, or confident with grammar drills but lost when a poem asks what the speaker feels. A one-to-one tutor can see which part is costing marks and spend the class there.

  • Grammar and usage — tenses, subject–verb agreement, reported speech, active and passive voice, modals, determiners, and the gap-filling, editing and transformation questions built on them.
  • Reading comprehension — locating the answer in an unseen passage, inferring meaning, and replying in the student’s own words instead of copying whole lines.
  • Writing — letters, notices, articles, reports, speeches, diary entries and essays, each in the format and length the board expects.
  • Literature — the prescribed poems, stories and plays: what happens, what it means, and how to write about theme, character and poetic devices with evidence from the text.

How does English differ across CBSE, ICSE and Kerala State?

The underlying skills overlap, but each board asks for them in its own way, so tuition follows the paper your child will actually sit:

  • CBSE: the English course your school offers — usually English Language and Literature in Classes 9 and 10, and English Core in Classes 11 and 12 — each with its own writing formats and literature readers.
  • ICSE and ISC: English is examined as two papers — English Language, covering composition, letter writing, comprehension and grammar, and Literature in English, built around prescribed drama, prose and poetry.
  • Kerala State: writing tasks are often framed as “discourses” — a diary entry, profile, notice, letter, speech or conversation — so students practise recognising which format a question wants and what belongs in it.
  • IB and IGCSE: we follow the English course your child’s school has chosen, along with its set texts — just tell us the course name when you get in touch.

Why does English writing matter beyond the English paper?

Long answers in Science, Social Science and Economics are English writing too. The paragraph habits practised in an English class — a clear opening point, an explanation, a supporting example — are the same ones those answers call for, so time spent here is rarely confined to one subject.

That is why the tutor looks at structure as closely as grammar: where an answer drifts away from the question, where a quotation is dropped in without comment, where a conclusion simply repeats the opening line. Your child hears why each change matters, in the moment, rather than finding it marked in red later.

Is this a spoken English course?

No — this is tuition for English as a school subject, matched to your child’s syllabus and exams. Even so, every class is a live conversation. Your child reads passages aloud, explains how they understand a poem, and talks through a writing plan before putting pen to paper, so speaking practice happens naturally inside each lesson.

If the goal is purely conversational English rather than the school subject, mention it when you contact us, so we can tell you plainly whether school-focused tuition is the right fit.

What do parents see after each English class?

A written summary follows every class, and our team reads it before it is shared with you: the grammar point or text covered, the writing task attempted, the errors that kept appearing, and what to read or rewrite before next time.

Your parent portal keeps those summaries beside the history of completed classes. Over a term they become a simple record of which writing formats and literature texts have been covered and which still need work — useful in the weeks before an exam, when it is easy to lose track.
